BLACK HISTORY MONTH

I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge Black History Month. Since the themes surrounding Black History Month have all but been exhausted I thought I would share a few names of those who have greatly inspired me as an artist and the words that immediately come to mind. There are so many who have influenced me that it almost seems unfair to name just a few but here goes. Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Zora Neale Hurston, Cab Calloway, Toni Morrison, Josephine Baker and Duke Ellington. All icons in their own right have done so much to shape their respective generations and through their past contributions have given exponentially to the future. They each represent unrelenting courage, innovation, creativity, wisdom, originality, artistry, vision and imagination. It is thanks to them and those like them that we progress and that true artistry can be built upon and shared by all.

Los Angeles Trip & The Grammy’s

When I heard that I would be traveling to LA for Grammy week you could say I was excited. The East coast chill was starting to take its toll…but even though the promise of sun drenched days in LaLa land danced in my head, it was merely a perk. What’s really exciting to me about LA is that it seems everyone you meet is somehow involved in the entertainment industry. It’s like being in a city full of your peers, except, primarily platinum blonde and in other ways, slightly altered — but peers nonetheless. Even though I would be there for just a quick weekend, I knew it would be a blast.

The “getting there” part is always a drag. In the plane I wished they would just fly faster! It’s something about that last hour on the plane that makes me stir crazy. Just as my iPod mini was running on fumes the plane touched down. Finally I was there. Although the flying experience would have been much more ideal if only it were a three hour flight instead of nearly double (and sometimes more!) Then again, there seems to be something inherently foreboding about any “three-hour tour”. So, I suppose the six long hours will have to do.

So, the “primary” event of the trip was just that. Primary Wave Talent Management and Violator Management, which recently merged, were throwing a big Pre-Grammy party, which turned out to be truly beyond fabulous! Why does it seem like LA always does it better? At least where parties are concerned!

The venue in Beverly Hills at The Bazaar was absolutely gorgeous. There were multiple rooms to mingle and even an outdoor area along with heating lamps to complete the LA experience. Did I mention the food? Unbelievable! Even though I did not sample everything offered, the presentation alone was enough for me to give it at least four stars! Although, admittedly I did not do a full tasting of the savory offered, I did of course sample the sweets…and it was spectacular! From cupcake towers, to white chocolate filigree lollipops sprinkled with chili power, to dark chocolate caramel squares topped with gold covered peanuts. I was in heaven.

After opening for Cee Lo Green in Florida, it was fantastic to meet up with him again at the party—Still trying to decide if his comment that I looked “dangerous” was a complement or otherwise…If you’re not sure, always assume it to be flattery! Must have been my awesome neon and dark green scuba-esque fitting slinky dress (thank-you Shopbop.com), which I amped up with a wild clip-on hair strip of platinum/neon/pastel/rainbow craziness! Perfect for NIVEA’s Million Moments of Touch Photoboth where I’m pretty sure I took a few too many photos! But when the booth’s technology makes every shot look “ photoshoot worthy”, how can you resist? Especially when they are printing out the photos on site right before your very eyes! Check out a few of my Photobooth shenanigans below:

All in all, the night was just fabulous. I also got to meet the fantastic Curly Nikki who’s website I love!! (www.curlynikki.com) As the night was winding down, I truly did not want to leave. I thought about stuffing as many chocolate squares as possible into my tiny evening clutch, but ultimately decided against it, not just because there’s nothing fashionable about melted chocolate lining your vintage bag, but also because there were still plenty of guests there and I didn’t want to deprive them of their share of treats! Not to mention how that might affect my “image”—or should I say, my silhouette!

So, as my car pulled up and I climbed in, I waved goodbye not just to the wonderful party that night but also to LA. Until next time…

From A to Y: The Laduree Macaron

I am officially launching a new blog here on my site called From A to Y! It will cover everything from fashion to food to music and more! I’m going to go ahead and kick off the first edition of From A to Y below!

The last time I was in Paris was with my best friend of forever. It’s scary how long we have known each other. We have covered a lot of ground on our many travels around the globe but maintain that Paris, is in our eyes, our hands down favorite city to visit.

Meandering through the city of lights we happened upon the very famous Laduree patisserie. Known for their beyond heavenly Macaron we decided to pause our trek for a taste of what everyone was raving about. Let me tell you…they weren’t kidding. The texture was perfect, flavors flawless and girlish colors divine; which added a bit of the sublime to the overall ambitious day on our feet.

As many know, I have a pretty significant relationship with my sweets. Though many desserts have their own acceptably delicious qualities none can prevail over dark chocolate. Let’s be honest. It’s really the only logical choice from a platter of treats. I truly believe those who say they aren’t thrilled by the delights of it are being ironically subversive. As a side note, in writing, you can sometimes lose slight meaning that intonation in speech brings. So, for all those reading please re-read the word dark chocolate but now as I see it… carrying a scepter and with a five part harmony with sufficient re-verb that one would hear from your average cathedral. With (and again) dark chocolate being close to my heart I make an addendum to my list of favorites by adding Laduree’s macaron to the very top.

Needless to say, when I heard that a New York location recently opened on the Upper East Side I hurried to make time for a stop. With the memory of our close to perfect experience in Paris I was hopeful that the New York shop would at least come close to that ultimate one some three and a half thousand miles away.

Be sure to check back to see how my experience at Laduree NYC measured up to their Parisian counterpart!

A Sneak Peek at the New Photoshoot

I recently wrapped a photoshoot with the incredible photographer Claire Rosen. The photo above captures the new look and feel of the elegance, mystery, and sultry sensuality, of what I was after. Anchored in the fantastic imagery of the roaring 20’s and the icons that embodied the 30’s and 40’s, yet intriguingly infused with a distinct, current flair.

Oxidized decades brought back to life and then combined with the luster and appeal of a post-modernistic approach.

To create a new lane that is an authentic and unique reflection of my identity as an artist, is what I set out to convey with these images.

My goal is to revive and contemporize the lost art of glamour…why not add a little dazzle?

There will be more photos coming soon! ::AY::

What better way to kick off the start of fall than Fashion’s Night Out!

Fall is in the air and everyone is ready to wear or find that amazing new piece that just spells out the season. An incredible night of traveling around town in support of the fashion industry. Everyone is decked out and ready to check out what fall has to offer. It’s fashion in full effect.

Fashion is the expression of oneself through the art of what you chose to put on your body. An indication to others of how you choose to present yourself amid all of the many variations of expression. A night of pure fashion. Needless to say, it was a fantastic evening. I made stops at Alexander Wang, Vivienne Tam and even got the chance to dance in a storefront window at Tracy Reese for a gift bag. One of the night’s highlights was of course, being interviewed by fashion journalist, Louise Roe for Shopbop.com. about fashion trends, designers and my new single “Don’t Play with Me.”

In honor of Fashion’s Nite Out, I was giving away free downloads of my new single all night long to passersby and to anyone who made a purchase from my new fashion line on Ayoungrose.com. Being able to share my vision of fashion with others has truly been a dream come true. In school, I was constantly imagining and scribbling ideas of gowns and wonderfully feminine blouses on pieces of paper. It’s just incredible to now see that dream turned into reality!

Creating a line that combines elegance, sophistication and edge was what I was after. The understated statement piece, seemingly so effortless, is the nature of how I wanted to present my line. There is something so powerfully timeless when you look back at Hollywood icons like Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth and Marylin Monroe. Their captivating essence of presentation is something of the eternal and is what I wanted to model the line after. In honor of their elegance.

How ever you choose to dress, whatever your style, their something for you during Fashion’s Night Out. If you have a love for fashion in any capacity, then it’s a night not to be missed. It’s as if the night is one big party all over the city that is being hosted by fashion itself. What better way to jump-start the beginning of Fashion Week.
